3. A few ounces of water in to cool the drill bit when cutting.
If you don't like to read and want to get straight to the point, here's my video on how it's done!
This method uses a drill bit called an diamond hole saw which is a cylindrical bit, with fine diamond grit embedded on the cutting end. It attaches to any corded or cordless drill. The kit I used includes a guide that holds the bit exactly where you want to drill, and also holds a small amount of water around the bit for cooling and dust control.
Technique
Start by deciding exactly where you'll be placing your faucet holes. Keep in mind that the backsplash may get in the way of some faucet fixtures and you should try and dry laying out your fixtures prior to cutting your holes.
Look underneath your sink to make sure your hole won't be over something that will affect the placement of your Faucet.
If you have an undermount sink, ensure it's lip isn't going to be in the way.
Some countertops will have an underlayment made out of plywood. If you don't have a wood cutting holw saw, and want to try and save a few bucks, you can watch my video on how well the diamond drill bit cut through wood. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFWvVzlGF4Y If you have a holesaw made for cutting wood please use it.
Place a towel underneath your countertop. When the drill bit cuts through, the watery slurry will drop underneath the countertop and make a mess. Attach the double-sided foam adhesive backing to the plastic guide, then place the plastic guide over your proposed faucet hole. Fill the guide with a little bit of water. Insert the bit into the drill and start drilling. Start at a slow speed with light pressure. As you get a feel for the tool, slowly increase the speed and push down with light to moderate pressure. The drill bit cuts in a fashion similar to sandpaper, so don't press too hard. It'll take approximately a minute or two to cut all the way through. When you're done remove the guide and apply a new adhesive backing to the guide and then cut your next hole.
